The World of Warcraft is an expansive universe. You're playing the game, you're fighting the bosses, you know the how -- but do you know the why? Each week, Matthew Rossi and Anne Stickney make sure you Know Your Lore by covering the history of the story behind World of Warcraft.
Second verse, same as th...
- WoW Moviewatch: Back to Cata9 April 2014, 1:00 am
Filed under: WoW Moviewatch, Cataclysm
With the long wait for new game content, maybe it's time to go back in time with Back to Cata by Slightly Impressive. After all, there's Cataclysm raids to be raided and achievements to be gotten -- not to mention that whole revamped leveling experience to enjoy. And maybe the occasional fiery death, but only occasional. (Probably.)
If this isn't going back quite far enough for you, you can also go Back to Vanilla, Back to BC, Back to Wrath, and Back to Wr...
- Expansions, redesign, and the balance of WoW3 April 2014, 8:00 pm
Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Blizzard, The Burning Crusade, Wrath of the Lich King, Cataclysm, Mists of Pandaria, Warlords of Draenor
Between Cataclysm and Mists of Pandaria, the warlock class saw a near-total redesign that, at this distant remove, we'd have to admit was a runaway success. Class redesigns are always a risky proposition - the dilemma is always between those who find the class reinvigorated and those that liked the class as it was, who now find it unfamiliar and undesirable to...

- Warlords of Draenor: Flight path reassurance17 April 2014, 12:00 am
Community Manager Bashiok has posted on the official forums in an attempt to calm players' fears about the enforced dependence on flight-paths that will come with Warlords of Draenor.
We're going to be making sure flight paths and other forms of travel are quick and efficient, with a goal of getting you to the places you want to go. Flight paths in the past have always been "the scenic route", lazily listing from side to side and around waterfalls to the intended oohs-and-aahs of...
- WoW Moviewatch: The Oscars in Azeroth16 April 2014, 11:00 pm
Slightly Impressive never ceases to amuse me. This week, he's put together a look at the Oscars, Azeroth-style. Complete with the traditional red carpet interviews regarding fashion and the subsequent nominees and awards, The Oscars in Azeroth is a funny, well put together parody that hits all the right marks. For those that have been following Slightly Impressive's videos for a while, there's even a throwback to an earlier video with a rap battle that refuses to be forgotten. While I enjoyed ...
- The World as Story: Emergent storytelling in World of Warcraft16 April 2014, 10:00 pm
How does storytelling function in World of Warcraft? What are its limits? Does it have to unfold solely via quest text, or can it be told via other means? I ask this in part due to a developing discussion on the scale and scope of how the world we interact with as we play reveals the story elements. Back when I first started playing WoW, game story was almost exclusively revealed via quest text. When it wasn't, it was often revealed via in-game books. I remembered being floored with the pre-fig...
- Elder Charms, LFR loot, and perception of the doubly random7 December 2012, 1:00 am
Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Cheats, Raiding, Mists of Pandaria
One of the things I've noticed since Mists of Pandaria launched is rooted in a quirk of human psychology. The commonplace becomes expected, the expected becomes tedious, and what was once a reward seems less so. I'm talking about what happens when you use an Elder Charm of Good Fortune to get an extra roll on loot for a boss, whether it be in LFR or a guild raid, and you get extra gold instead of an item, or an item you alread...
- 5 tips for playing WoW with a baby on your chest14 August 2012, 1:00 am
Filed under: Cheats, Events, Humor
Seems like a lot of WoW Insider has spontaneously had a baby recently. OK, not spontaneous. A child isn't the sort of thing that creeps up on you. There's warning, is what I'm saying. You have time to plan. And that time's pretty important, because once your bundle of joy is in this world, things get a whole lot more complex. Like playing WoW.
I'm obviously not one of those folks who say you have to quit your gaming life the second you have a child, but ther...

Earlier in the day, raiding group Paragon apologized for exploiting a bug in the Raid Finder tool that allowed their raiders to obtain loot from a boss more than once in a lockout period. Blizzard has followed up with a statement of its own, explaining that people who exploited the bug in a similar manner will be receiving temporary suspensions.

- Legendary East strikes deal over Warcraft film distribution16 April 2014, 7:00 pm

You're probably familiar with the Burbank-based company Legendary Entertainment, at least because they're the powerhouse behind the "Warcraft" film. Their affiliate, Legendary East, has recently announced that the largest film distributor in China, China Film Co., has made an eight-figure investment in two of Legendary's upcoming films--"Seventh Son" and, you guessed it, "Warcraft." If either film gets released in China, China Film Co. will be the one to d...

Senior Game Designer Jeremy Feasel (he has an NPC named after him, the ultimate honor) has been answering questions on twitter about garrisons. Quite a few, in fact. Under his twitter handle of @Muffinus he dished out some pretty interesting details on what the current design for the feature is.
Garrisons are going to give you perks outside of them (we already knew about the faster mount speed perk, but others are bein...

Over on the EU forums is an ongoing discussion of a type that usually comes about every expansion cycle: the question of whether or not your computer will need upgrades in order to run the new content. The short answer from CM Taepsilum is that, if you're happy with your computer's current performance in WoW, you're probably fine for Warlords of Draenor. So there's the answer to that.
However, fleetingly mentioned at the beginning of the post is the ...

Sunday Morning Funnies is your weekly list of WoW-related web comics.

In comic news from the past week, the Looking for Group site has been redesigned. Plus, the kraken is still around! And he has...
- Wowcraft episode 210 April 2014, 10:00 pm
Filed under: Humor
Not too long ago, CarBot animations released the first episode of their WoW-themed shorts, Wowcraft. CarBot's an old hand at adorable tongue-in-cheek takes on Blizzard games, having done a parody trailer for Reaper of Souls, Heroes of the Storm, and a whole series on StarCraft. The videos are sweet and often hilarious, deftly poking fun at experiences I'm sure most of us can relate to. In Wowcraft's second episode, "Quest for Tooth," our (still) nameless hero is assigned the ...

It's not often you see a commercial parody in a WoW machinima--well, maybe parody isn't the right word. This Brad Bergman video isn't so much making fun of the commercial as it is recasting it using WoW as footage, instead of the original.
The manipulations around the characters mouths and the clever use of idle animations are what really sell this clip. Unusual as the genre may be, it's worth a shot. Give it a watch if you get a kick out of WoW-ified film au...
